Rhinoplasty

Nose plastic surgery (rhinoplasty) is a surgical procedure aimed at changing the shape and/or size of the nose.

Rhinoplasty

This procedure can address not only aesthetic defects, but also to restore normal and proper breathing. Depending on which part of the nose requires correction, several types of rhinoplasty are distinguished.

Types of Rhinoplasty

  • Open rhinoplasty
During open nose surgery, the procedure is performed through an incision in the vertical fold that separates the nostrils. This type of procedure is indicated for extensive and significant deformations. It allows our surgeon to perform a more comprehensive intervention. After open rhinoplasty a scar remains at the base of the nose, which becomes almost invisible over time.
  • Closed rhinoplasty
This type of nose correction leaves no visible scars. Incisions are made inside the nasal cavity. Postoperative swelling subsides, the risk of scar deformities is minimal.
  • Rhinoseptoplasty (a surgery involving both the outer nose and nasal septum)
It is recommended for patients who have aesthetic imperfections, as well as defects of various types, or a deviated septum and breathing difficulties. Such dysfunction can be congenital or acquired as a result of injury. Surgery effectively resolves all breathing-related problems, as well as aesthetic defects that are uncomfortable for the patient.
  • Secondary rhinoplasty
In complicated cases, after the initial rhinoplasty, secondary nose correction may be necessary. For better results, it is possible to use the patient’s own tissues, usually cartilage from the ear (this does not change the shape of the ear, as only a small amount of cartilage is collected).

Consultations

During the first consultation, the doctor performs a thorough examination of the nasal cavity using specialized tools or endoscopic techniques. The next stage involves taking photos from two perspectives: profile and front view. To visualize the surgical outcome, our doctor will use specialized computer software.

This allows you to verify if you have correctly explained your desires to the surgeon and see how your nose will look after the rhinoplasty. During the initial consultation, you will also be informed about the limitations you will face post-surgery and the approximate recovery time.

Before the Procedure

Here are the main recommendations before nose surgery:

  • One month before the procedure, avoid aggressive cosmetic treatments (deep peels etc.).
  • Two weeks before the surgery, do not consume alcohol, and avoid smoking. Refrain from taking blood-thinning medications and avoid sunbathing both in the sun and in the solarium.
  • One week before surgery, purchase necessary medications for post-operative care and stop using cosmetics.
  • Do not eat or drink 8 hours before surgery, avoid perfumes, and prepare comfortable clothing for the clinic visit.

Patients with vision problems should prepare contact lenses, which they will use for some time post-surgery. It is necessary because wearing grasses will be prohibited in that period.

The Procedure

Depending on the tasks planned by the surgeon, the operation may last from 2.5 to 6 hours. General anesthesia is used in most cases. In the preoperative ward, you will fall asleep and wake up after the surgery. You will not experience any discomfort or pain during the operation.

In the case of open surgery, our surgeons will apply special stitches that allow for an aesthetic effect.

Nasal packing will be used to maintain the shape of the nose and control bleeding. It should be removed after a maximum of two days.

After the Procedure

  • The day after surgery, you will meet with your surgeon. During this consultation, various hygienic procedures are performed, and the doctor provides advice and prescribes medications you will take at home.

Breathing through the nose will be difficult for about two weeks after surgery.

  • On the fifth day post-surgery, you will need to visit our clinic for a check-up and dressing replacement.
  • After about 10 days, the bandage will be removed, and you will see the first results of your nose correction.
  • Full recovery takes 6 to 12 months, at which point the final result can be fully evaluated.

What are the Contraindications for Rhinoplasty?

Contraindications include certain diseases such as diabetes, kidney pathologies, cardiovascular and liver diseases, respiratory infections, and infectious or viral diseases. Additionally, surgery should not be performed during pregnancy and lactation. The minimum age of the patient is 18 years (exceptions may apply for medical reasons).

What should I bring to the clinic?

You should bring comfortable clothing that does not risk injuring the nose when dressing, and comfortable shoes. Due to bandages and swelling, it is a good idea to take headphones, as watching movies or reading books will be impossible.

How Long Will Bruising and Swelling Last?

Usually, swelling gradually increases until the third day after surgery and occurs around the nose and eyes, potentially causing nasal congestion.

There may also be bruising around the nose and eyes, but this usually subsides within 10–14 days.

What should I do During the Post-Operative Recovery at Home?

Do not blow your nose. If necessary, gently clean the nasal passages with cotton swabs, using care and precise movements. It is recommended to avoid physical activity, including swimming, for at least a month.

Use a soft toothbrush when brushing your teeth to avoid straining your upper lip and nose. Be careful not get the bandage wet when washing your face or hair.

Wearing glasses is not recommended, use contact lenses instead. If you experience discomfort, you may need to avoid lenses for 2–3 days. Avoid direct sunlight for about 6 weeks after surgery. If the procedure is performed in the autumn or winter, avoid hypothermia, as nasal sensitivity to temperature decreases after rhinoplasty.

Wear loose and comfortable clothing that is easy to put on, and avoid tight-necked clothing such as turtlenecks or shirts.
Other treatments and medications require a doctor’s consultation. After the bandage is removed, the skin can be treated with a semi-rich cream.

When Can I Wear Makeup?

Do not wear makeup or use cosmetics before the bandage is removed. Afterward, apply cosmetic products gently, avoid pressure or unnecessary massage.
