Scar correction

Scar correction is most often performed on unsightly scars on the face and other areas of the body.

Scar correction

Scars are imperfections that form during the healing process of damaged skin. They typically have a less elastic, firm structure, which can cause discomfort, itching, skin tightness, and even pain. In addition to these physical issues, scars can also lead to psychological challenges, causing insecurities, loss of confidence, and stress.

The development of scars can be influenced by several factors, such as skin hydration level or genetic predispositions. Depending on these factors and the type of wound, scars generally develop as:

  • Atrophic scars – such as those from acne, or chickenpox, which form indentations below the surface of healthy skin.
  • Linear scars – typically post-operative, pale and minimally visible.
  • Hypertrophic scars – these develop after surgeries, burns or other injuries, and while raised above the skin surface, they do not extend beyond the wound area.
  • Keloids – formed after deep injuries or burns, these are scar tissue tumors. They are firm and much larger than the area of damaged skin.

Scar Correction – General Information

The aim of scar correction is to improve its appearance by flattening and softening the tissue, as well as evening out its texture and color. At our clinic, we utilize advanced and diverse methods to reduce scar visibility.

The correction technique is selected individually based on the specific scar, depending on its type, size, and location. Most procedures do not require an overnight stay – you can return home the same day.

Consultations

During the initial consultation, the doctor will go over your medical history, examine and assess the scar, and recommend the best correction method. You will discuss your expectations, the expected results, and the procedure process. If necessary, the doctor may order some tests before proceeding.

Before the Procedure

In most cases, scar correction does not require special preparation, although a lot depends on the chosen method. During the consultation, the doctor will provide you with all the necessary information on pre-procedure instructions. For example, smokers should quit smoking a few weeks before undergoing surgical scar removal because smoking impairs proper wound healing.

The Procedure

For some methods, such as surgery, the procedure is performed once. Others, like laser therapy or microneedling, may require several sessions to achieve the best results. If anesthesia is necessary to perform the procedure, it is typically administered locally. In rare cases, general anesthesia may be necessary for extensive scarring. The duration of the procedure depends on the selected method and the size of the scar.

  1. Surgical scar removal
Some scars can be excised, after which the doctor will stitch the properly prepared edges of the wound. This way, only a thin line remains on the skin, which fades over time. To reduce tissue tension and further conceal the scar, two types of techniques may be applied:

    • W-plasty – the doctor cuts the scar with a zigzag line, which resembles a series of “W” letters once sutured. This method is particularly effective for used especially for long scars.
    • Z-plasty – in addition to removing the scar, the doctor makes two extra incisions that resemble the letter “Z”. This helps the scar blend better with the natural curvature of the skin.
  2. Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy involves brief contact of the skin with the element cooled to around -80॰C, reducing and softening the lesion. In the case of hypertrophic scars and keloids, the spray method is also used, where the freezing agent is sprayed directly onto the scar.
  3. Laser Therapy
Laser beams act directly on particles present in the skin, such as melanin, water, and collagen, which forms the scar. This method is commonly used for post-acne lesions, post-traumatic scars and skin contractures. The best results are typically achieved after a series of 3 to 5 treatments.
  4. Microneedling
Using a device called the SkinPen, multiple micro-punctures are performed to stimulate the skin’s regenerative processes. This helps reduce the visibility of scars, such as those caused by acne. A series of treatments is recommended for optimal results.
  5. Steroid injections
Glucocorticoids are drugs that locally inhibit collagen synthesis. They are injected directly into the interior of the scar, causing it to soften and shrink. This method works best for fresh hypertrophic scars.
  6. Fat grafting
Atrophic scars can be filled using your own fat tissue, which is harvested from areas where there is excess. This is a safe, long-lasting method that also allows you to remove a unwanted fat from the abdomen or thighs.

After the Procedure

In the case of surgical scar removal, the stitches will be removed after approximately 7 to 14 days. The doctor will also assess the effectiveness of the procedure and the wound’s healing process. Regardless of the method used, avoid direct exposure of the scar to the sun. Use sunscreen with a high SPF, or cover the area with clothing. Follow all of your doctor’s recommendations regarding the scar care.

Contraindications

Each method has its own specific contraindications, which the doctor will exclude during your consultation. Scar correction is not recommended in cases of:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Skin infections or damage near the scar
  • Poor general health
  • Unstable chronic conditions
  • Skin cancers
  • Certain medications, e.g. during laser therapy, treatments that increase photosensitivity should be avoided.
