Tummy Tuck Surgery

This procedure is most commonly performed in obesity or after pregnancy, when excess loose skin remains.

Tummy Tuck Surgery

A tummy tuck (also known as abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess, sagging skin from the abdomen and lower belly. The so-called skin-fat fold may result from factors such as:

  • pregnancy
  • rapid, significant weight loss
  • previous surgical intervention
  • natural aging and skin loosening.

Unfortunately, sagging skin will not return to its original form neither by itself, nor as a result of diet or training. Abdominoplasty is a well-established and proven procedure that delivers the desired effects.

The tummy tuck surgery improves not only the appearance, but – perhaps most importantly – mental well-being. Sagging skin after weight loss masks a spectacular effect that cost you a lot of effort. In turn, its excess after giving birth to a child takes away part of the joy and satisfaction that comes from returning to the pre-pregnancy body fitness.

Tummy Tuck Surgery: General Information

The goal of abdominoplasty is to improve the appearance of the abdomen by tightening the skin and strengthening the muscles, helping to sculpt the body’s contour. This procedure is not a weight loss solution. It is intended to enhance appearance after significant weight reduction.

The procedure involves removing the skin-fat fold from the middle and lower abdomen. During surgery, stretch marks, scars, and other imperfections in the treated area can also be removed. The surgeon tightens abdominal muscles, reshapes the underlying tissue, and repositions the skin to create a smooth, firm look.

The tummy tuck surgery may be performed on a small are or a significant part of the abdomen. Depending on the extent of the surgery, anesthesia may vary from:

  • epidural,
  • spinal,
  • general anesthesia.

For an even more comprehensive body contouring effect, a tummy tuck can be combined with liposuction.

  • zewnątrzoponowe,
  • dolędźwiowe,
  • ogólne.

Plastykę powłok brzusznych możesz dodatkowo połączyć z zabiegiem odsysania tkanki tłuszczowej (liposukcją). W ten sposób kompleksowo wymodelujesz sylwetkę.

Consultations

During your consultation, the doctor will conduct a medical interview and decide on the qualification for the procedure. Discuss your medical history with the doctor, and remember to mention any conditions, allergies, and medications you’re taking. The doctor will examine your abdomen, evaluate the potential for abdominoplasty, and discuss the surgery and recovery process with you, as well as your expectations for the results.

You will also decide on the area to be treated and the type of anesthesia to be used.

Before the Procedure

Before the procedure, it is necessary to perform certain tests, including blood counts – details of which will be provided during the consultation. Maintain a healthy diet, but avoid medications and supplements that could affect blood clotting. Follow any prescriptions and instructions from your doctor carefully. If you smoke, try to quit a few weeks before surgery.

The Procedure

The tummy tuck procedure involves a horizontal incision near the pelvic bones, and the belly button is also repositioned. The surgeon separates the skin and fat from the abdominal muscles, tightens and stitches them as necessary for long-lasting results, then stretches and removes excess skin. Drains will be inserted to remove any collected blood or fluids. At the end, the skin is stitched, and the belly button is placed in a new position. The procedure typically takes around 3 hours.

After the Procedure

After the surgery, you’ll need to rest lying down for the first 24 hours. Most patients stay at the clinic for about 2 days to ensure proper care and wound healing supervised by our personnel. If no complications arise, further recovery will take place at home. You will receive detailed instructions on how to care for the treated area.

A follow-up appointment will be scheduled 1-2 weeks after the surgery to remove the stitches and assess healing. You may receive additional care tips or recommendations based on your health condition.

During the first two weeks take a lot of rest. Avoid heavy lifting, sudden movements, and physical exertion. Stay in a slightly tilted position to prevent unnecessary tension on the abdominal skin. Pain and swelling are common during this time – use any prescribed pain medications as directed by your doctor.

Wear a an elastic outfit or compression belt for several weeks after the procedure to help the abdomen shrink, remove tension, reduce swelling, and support the healing process.

Your skin will be sensitive after the surgery, as is the subsequent scar, so avoid direct sun exposure to the area. Postoperative physiotherapy is also recommended, to speed up recovery. You’ll start to see the initial results of the surgery after about a month when the swelling subsides and the incision heals.

Contraindications

Tummy tuck surgery is designed for individuals in good physical condition. Therefore, contraindications include poor general health, as well as:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension, especially untreated hypertension
  • Kidney disease
  • Skin infections in the abdominal area
  • Pregnancy, or plans for future pregnancy
  • Connective tissue diseases
  • Contraindications to anesthesia.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will there be a scar after the procedure?
Yes, there will be a thin, horizontal scar on the lower abdomen, but it will fade over time. You’ll receive care instructions to help minimize its appearance. The scar is easily hidden under underwear or swimwear.
  • Do I need to repeat the procedure?
No, the procedure is typically done only once, with permanent results. In most cases, there is no need to repeat it. However, lifestyle factors such as poor diet and lack of physical activity could lead to weight gain and repeated skin stretching.
  • What results can I expect?
A tummy tuck will give you a slimmer, more proportionate silhouette. Loose skin and stretch marks will be removed. The final results will look natural, with the scar hidden in an inconspicuous place. The full outcome will be visible once the healing process is complete, usually around 2 months after surgery.
